Research partner: Injoest

The Institute for Jewish History in Austria (Injoest) was founded in 1988 and has been housed at the cantor’s house to provide a meaningful use for the abandoned synagogue. One of its main areas of research is the history of the Jewish community in St. Pölten. The virtual memory book “Jews in St. Pölten”, dedicated to those persecuted during the Nazi era, contains around 1,500 entries. Also accessible online are graves at the new Jewish cemetery and a list of those buried in the old Jewish cemetery. Injoest is a close cooperation partner of the Former Synagogue St. Pölten, providing scholarly advice and mediation.

    Commemorative activities

Since its foundation in 1988, Injoest has been committed to preserving memory. In 2018, in partnership with the City of St. Pölten, it initiated the annual placement of “Stones of Remembrance” at the last voluntary residences of victims of the Shoah. As of October 2023, there are 63 stones for 119 individuals in St. Pölten and ten stones commemorating 21 people in Wilhelmsburg. The annual commemoration of the November 1938 pogroms marks the closure of the building for the winter. It reopens in mid-April with a new temporary exhibition.
