Description
Semmering - a popular summer resort region since the 19th century. It has a long history with Jewish guests, stretching from the Middle Ages - when trade routes of Jewish merchants led through the area - to the present day. Following the expansion of the railroad, there were soon kosher hotels, Jewish doctors and a special sports and leisure culture in Semmering, which became a destination for health tourism and the center of social life. Celebrities such as Sigmund Freud, Arthur Schnitzler, Berta Zuckerkandl and others come for a summer retreat, live in villas and dress in local costumes as a sign of their affiliation. But carefree vacation days are increasingly marred by anti-Semitism, which ultimately leads to their expulsion and expropriation by the National Socialists.
